Surprising Verdict: MNA Abdul Lateef and Ex-MPA Wazir Zada Sentenced to 10 Years

The recent verdict of an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has shocked many across the country. MNA Abdul Lateef and former MPA and Adviser to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Minorities, Mr. Wazir Zada, have been found guilty in connection with the events of May 9, 2023. Each has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

This judgment has triggered mixed reactions among the public. Mr. Wazir Zada, known for his moderate views and decent political conduct, had earned respect not only from minority communities but also from a broad spectrum of society, including members of religious and mainstream political parties. His reputation as a tolerant and bridge-building leader is widely acknowledged, and many have expressed sorrow over his conviction.

In contrast, Abdul Lateef's case has been met with little sympathy. He is widely seen as an arrogant and disrespectful figure who often demeans others, especially political opponents. His behavior in the Parliament and on TV talk shows has drawn widespread criticism. His infamous "woo woo" chant in Parliament remains viral, symbolizing his unrefined approach to political discourse. His frequent use of abusive and unparliamentary language has further damaged his public image.

A recent incident in Booni only added to the public's disapproval of Mr. Lateef. During his visit to address a protest staged by the people of Torkhow and Terich against alleged corruption in the Booni-Buzund Road project, he was met with the same mocking "woo woo" slogans by young protestors. Instead of responding with grace or trying to address the legitimate concerns of the people, he reportedly behaved aggressively and even initiated legal actions under criminal sections against some protestors. This heavy-handed response deepened public resentment against him.

Now, in the very near future,  both men will be in judicial custody, there is a clear contrast in public sentiment. People regret Wazir Zada’s fall, hoping that justice will ultimately prevail. But when it comes to Abdul Lateef, many are openly satisfied with the outcome and see his imprisonment as a fitting consequence of his divisive conduct.
